Native Plant Festival To Feature Heirloom Tomatoes
Flowering perennials, ferns, native trees and shrubs and delicious heirloom tomatoes will take center stage at the 12th annual Assateague Coastal Trust Native and Heirloom Plant Festival, scheduled for May 7th, 2011.
"We have more new varieties than we have ever featured at a Festival in past years," said Jim Rapp, ACT Outreach and Event Coordinator, "and three new heirloom tomatoes, including a plum tomato and the 'Mortgage Lifter,' which produces a wonderful 2 ½ pound fruit."
During the Festival, native trees and shrubs will be available for retail sale along with the native flowering plants. Besides the plants themselves a dozen local craftspeople will be exhibiting their work for sale. "All of our artists and craftspeople create either garden or nature-related work, or use natural materials in their products," said Festival volunteer Kim Fehrer. "We have woodworkers, birdhouse and bird feeder makers and glassworkers among others." Any artist or craftsperson interested in participating can learn more about the festival by calling 410-629-1538 or by viewing information here.
The Festival begins at 8:00 a.m. and is held at historic Golden Quarter Farm, on Route 376 (Assateague Road) about 4 miles east of Berlin. The farm is a perfect venue for a Festival that combines gardening activities, craft exhibits, nature walks and a children’s program.
Many of our items are only available through pre-ordering. Pre-orders of packages are required, and pre-orders of the heirloom tomatoes are highly recommended.
