Operation Medicine Drop Nets 205 Pounds of Meds

Local officials from the Worcester County Sheriff's Office, Worcester County Health Department, Ocean City Police Department, Berlin Police Department and Assateague Coastal Trust/Coastkeeper announced the October 29th Operation Medicine Drop event in Worcester County, as part of the Fall National Drug Take Back Day, was extremely successful netting a total of 205 lbs of unused and expired medications.

The spring 2011 event took in 130 lbs of pills, so despite the bad weather on the 29th, officials were extremely pleased with the turnout. “This lets us know the public is now better educated about the reasons for these events and they are also aware they now have multiple opportunities to safely dispose of unused medications in Worcester County,” noted Eastern Shore Regional DEA Agent David Rivello

Once again the Ocean Pines Food Lion was the top ‘take-back’ location, with over 104 lbs of medications turned in. The West Ocean City Food Lion was the second busiest drop off location.

Worcester County’s Operation Medicine Drop partner agencies and groups look forward to a spring event in 2012 and will announce the date and locations as soon as a Spring 2012 National Drug Take Back Day is announced by federal agencies.

The group thanks everyone who participated, and also thanks Food Lion, Inc for providing drop off locations.
